A quick review: What is self-care?

I apologize for skipping the month of June, but it was extremely busy. My time was spent visiting friends I haven’t seen in years and catching a baseball game with friends and family. I also spent the month of June attempting to grow “baby grass” on a spot that has been baren for over 7 years and keep my new beautiful containers of flowers alive. I’m excited to announce that the grass, flowers and plants are not only alive but also thriving. I guess I can check one more thing off my adulting checklist. Spending 10 minutes at the beginning and end of each day outside, watering the grass and flowers was much more than just a simple chore. It was more about soaking up nature and experiencing God’s creation at the start and finish of every day and was very good for my soul! This helped to ground me twice a day. Grounding happens to be one of my favorite self-care habits. I invite you to take part in my self-care challenge. This challenge does not require hours of your time each day and it is free!

There are many different definitions of self-care, but the best explanation I found is: “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” I love this definition for many different reasons, but most especially because it gives you power! Yes, you can take action to influence your life in a positive manner. Self-care is taking care of yourself so that you can function and be present in your daily life. I am sure that we have all heard that you cannot pour from an empty cup. We must be heathy, both mentally and physically, in order to accomplish all the things, we must do and want to do any given day.

When was the last time you were on an airplane? Do you remember the safety talk that is given before every flight takes off? They state to secure your own oxygen mask before attempting to help anyone around you. The reason that we must secure our own mask before, is to make sure we are capable of helping anyone else. If we do not have our basic life needs met, in this case oxygen, we do not have the ability to help anybody. I know this may seem basic and by this point I am being redundant, but do not miss why self-care is necessary.

The tag line and motto for my business for over 5 years has been, “Self-care is not selfish, but very necessary!” It’s not just a catchy, cute phrase but something that I believe to my core. I view massage as essential, not a luxury. It can be physically therapeutic if you are dealing with an injury or physical demanding job, or it can be more of a mental escape if you are drained emotionally or need an hour to flee the demands of life. This is self-care! It is not shameful, disgraceful or because you are weak. It’s quite the opposite, because it takes a confident and mature individual to pause and take care of themselves so they can turn around and show up completely for others. I know I probably sound like a broken record at this point, so if you are still reading thank you! I invite you to accept my self-care challenge by clicking here. It is a 5-day jump start to a daily self-care routine!

This week’s Young Living product to highlight is the Vetiver essential oil. I love to diffuse this oil on its own or with bergamot. This is a go-to oil for me when I need help grounding myself or relaxing, especially before bedtime.
