What is inflammation and is it bad?

Updated: Apr 4

How has it been a month since my last blog? This time of year seems to be a little crazier than normal, with all of the travel plans, large gatherings, and extra items to buy and/or prepare. I often am so busy with trying to keep up with everything that I forget to remember the reason for this season. I believe the reason for this season is to celebrate the birth of Jesus and the promise He came to fulfill. I love coming together with family and friends to celebrate His birth but also am reminded of the many blessings I have in my life. I also begin to reflect on the past year and begin planning for the upcoming year. This month I want to discuss all things inflammation, from what it is to its effect on the body and how to support our body’s response to it.

I was taught in my health coach training that the meaning of inflammation is “on fire.” That highlights the seriousness of the situation and should escalate our response to a diagnosis of chronic inflammation and/or the onset of symptoms. Inflammation is actually not “bad” or “negative,” it is the body’s response to an offending agent, such as bacteria or virus. When our body responds to a virus it sends out inflammatory cells and cytokines to trap the virus and begin the healing process, resulting in possible pain, bruising, swelling or redness. When I began my career as a massage therapist, it became my goal to teach each client I see to learn to listen to their body. The sooner you recognize the problem and possible cause, the sooner you can begin supporting your body to resolve the root problem and not just the symptoms.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, acute inflammation is “the response to sudden body damage, such as cutting your finger.” Inflammatory cells are sent to the injury to start the healing process. While chronic inflammation happens when “your body continues sending inflammatory cells even when there is no outside danger.” This can lead to a variety of diseases due to inflammatory cells attacking tissues unnecessarily, often causing severe damage to the otherwise healthy tissues along with pain or even deformities.

Golden Turmeric from Young Living is an amazing supplement that can aid in your body’s natural response to inflammation, as well as support immune response, joint health, and even recovery after exercise. This formula is water-dispersible, making it 24 times more bioavailable than other turmeric products.
